StrömungsRaum® has long served as a virtual prototyping platform ecosystem for industrial simulation and optimisation, combining declarative infrastructure management, container-based microservices and GitOps-like deployment to drive rapid prototyping of complex systems. The ECOTWIN project within the IPCEI extends StrömungsRaum with a construction kit of digital twin components for the cloud edge continuum. Lightweight edge agents and IoT connectors enable real-time inference and control, surrogate models accelerate runtime evaluations, and bidirectional data bridges link on-site operation with central optimisation. Together, StrömungsRaum and ECOTWIN combine virtual prototyping and live digital twins - from supercomputers to edge devices - accelerating time-to-insight and fostering seamless collaboration across IPCEI communities.
At its core is a batch-driven data centre integration layer that schedules and executes asynchronous, heterogeneous workloads on GPU and CPU supercomputing clusters - with backfilling, priority queues and burndown coordination to maximise utilisation and minimise latency. A horizontally scalable pipeline processes and manages synthetic data from production simulations, maintaining high accuracy and enabling rapid iterations of virtual prototypes. Ease of use and field customisability are paramount: a modular web interface allows engineers and subject matter experts to set up, customise and redeploy workflows without in-depth DevOps knowledge, while hardware-accelerated, multi-stage algorithms ensure vertical efficiency and performance-driven resource allocation.
