SIGMA: Die Zukunft der Kunststoffverarbeitung – Revolutionäre Simulationstechnologie im Einsatz 

On Monday, our Team Leader for Polymer Processing, Marius, had the honor of giving a presentation at this year’s User Meeting of Plastics Technology Paderborn (KTP). Under the theme “Extension of Extrud3D: Implementation of a Melting Process for 3D Simulations,” he presented the current status of the project, sparking excitement among the audience.

SIGMA is an exciting collaborative research project involving leading industrial companies and the Chair of Plastics Processing at the University of Paderborn. This project is about a software that simulates compounding and processing operations on co-rotating twin-screw extruders. The main goal of SIGMA is to assess machine behavior, as well as the optimization of barrel, screw configurations, and process parameters more quickly and globally. Thanks to the collaboration with IANUS over the years, it has been made possible to directly perform 3D CFD simulations of the screw elements from SIGMA. This allows for an even more detailed insight into the processing operation. Through this partnership, SIGMA’s simulation technologies have been expanded and improved. In the current phase of the project, we are specifically working on further developing the 3D simulation capabilities. Our focus is on implementing the melting calculation in the CFD simulation. This extension will make it possible to examine the melting process more precisely, thus better understanding and optimizing processes in plastic processing. The project has the potential to revolutionize plastic processing. Through simulation technology, companies can make their production processes more efficient and enhance the quality of their plastic products. The rapid assessment of machine behavior and process parameters enables companies to respond more quickly to new requirements and market trends. This leads to increased competitiveness and innovation in the plastic industry.
